Braeden's first Christmas

December felt like the shortest month! We packed up the car (every spare inch was filled) and drove to Johnson City, NY on Thursday, December 15. Mat was in his best friend's wedding on Saturday, so we had to accelerate our Christmas travel plans. The weather was terrible on the 15th, starting with freezing rain that turned into snow in Winchester, VA. But we made it to the hotel around 4:30 after leaving our house at 4:15 AM.

I felt a little queasy, but went to dinner anyway with Chris, Brian, Lois, her sister Romaine, and Mat and Braeden. It wasn't a good idea...I had to leave early and then was sick for a day and a half with a stomach bug. (Potentially food poisening from my office's holiday potluck as I wasn't the only one from work afflicted!) Anyway, Mat's parents took care of Braeden on Friday while I rested and Mat ran some errands, including picking up his tux for Saturday's wedding.

Saturday morning I drove Braeden to Roscoe to meet my parents at the diner. We had breakfast--Braeden likes pancakes, by the way!--and then swapped cars so that Braeden could go back to Rhinebeck with them. Mat and I had a wonderful time at the wedding, which was beautiful, and drove to Rhinebeck the next morning.

We spent the next week at my parents' house and left the day after Christmas for the 12-hour drive back to Whitsett. But we had a great time and were so happy to celebrate Christmas with my nanny, great-aunt, sister and her fiance, and my parents. Christmas was just perfect! We took it easy and didn't end up opening presents until about 5:00 that evening after a huge meal of roast beast, turkey breast, mashed potatoes, and all the other fixings! Braeden ate tiny bites of beef, turkey, roll, and peas. He was one happy baby!

And he got a bunch of great gifts...almost too much stuff to fit in the car for the return trip! I'll post a few pictures when I can, but until then picture Braeden in a Santa hat--he kept it on just long enough to take the picture! :)

We'll celebrate Christmas with his other grandparents, Uncle Mark, Jenn, and Joe at Joe's house on Saturday, December 31. And then the next week Braeden turns 1! I promise to update more regularly in 2006. In fact, I'll make that my new year's resolution!

Merry Christmas everyone!

It's been a long time...

I'll open by saying I can't believe it's been more than a month since our last entry. We've been really busy since then! I'll try to recap the highs of the last month and then cover Braeden's first Christmas in the next post.

Braeden recovered pretty quickly from his bad cold, but kept the cough and wheezey breathing for a couple of weeks. He had a second chest x-ray which looked much better, so we felt like we dodged a bullet there.

Later in November we noticed that Braeden could stand by himself. After pulling up on something, he'd often let go and just hold onto a toy. He'd only do it for a couple of seconds and it seemed like when he realized he was standing alone, he'd quick grab onto something again. But he started doing it more and more frequently and for longer periods of time as he gained confidence in his legs.

Then we figured out it was time for him to start walking (assisted, that is). G-Ma and P-Pa had given him a hippo he could either ride or use as a walker. We stood him in front of it and he started to push it and walk behind it. The first few times he mostly just fell down. The hippo would move too fast and his feet wouldn't move at all. So he'd lean forward with his arms outstretched until he couldn't reach anymore, then he'd fall forward. But after a little while of this, he started to get the hang of it! He now walks the entire length of our house from the front door to the morning room windows. We have to steer because he hasn't figured that part out yet, but boy, is he fast!

He's nursing less which means he's eating more solid foods. We've started to expand his diet because he was definitely getting tired of plain pasta and green beans. Braeden's been eating cold, homemade mac and cheese, chicken breast, cheese, animal crackers, goldfish, and lima beans. He LOVES lima beans! And drinking juice from his sippy cup which he holds by both handles. Too cute!

Ready, set, go!

We can just imagine Braeden and his blue hippo toddling down the straight-away from your front door to the morning room windows! A wonderful movie! Cannot wait to see it first hand. (we have a long hallway!)

Poor Little Guy

The good news is that Braeden doesn't have pnuemonia; the bad news is that he has been sick and if left untreated, it could have become pnuemonia. Tuesday afternoon he had to leave day care early with a temp of almost 103. Thursday morning his temp was back to normal, but I stayed home with him just to be safe. By midday it was 100 and at 7:00 it was 103.8! Thursday Mat stayed home with Braeden and took him to the doctor at 10:00. No temp, but she was concerned about his labored breathing and cough. After a chest x-ray, she said he had mucous in his lungs. A 20-minute nebulizer treatment and three prescriptions later, Mat and Braeden were home again. Twice a day we give him an antibiotic and a steroid to open his airways. The third prescription is a worst-case scenario medicine, a just-in-case medicine.

He's been sleeping fine at night and eating well during the day. He's got less energy though and is quick to turn cranky. But we dropped him off at day care this morning. I'll check on him at lunch and post an update then.

Movin' On Up

Braeden has gotten to be too much for the infant room at his day care, so they've decided to move him into the toddler room. Such a big boy! He's figured out how to climb out of the high chair and the play pen, so it's just not safe for him in that room anymore. I went over at lunch today and met Kim, one of the room's caregivers. She's very sweet and talked me through the transition. Braeden will spend a couple hours in the toddler room on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday to get acclimated. He'll spend more time on Thursday and Friday and make the move officially the next Monday.

Instead of sleeping in cribs, the babies, I mean toddlers, sleep on tiny cots that are about an inch off the ground. They follow the same basic schedule--breakfast, play, lunch, nap, snack, play--as he's been used to. And the best part is that Braeden will be back with his buds, Matthew and Hudson! I think the bigger adjustment will be for me accepting that Braeden's not a baby anymore.

Our own little jack-o-lantern

Braeden's first Halloween was a quiet affair. He's wearing a long-sleeved orange, black, and white striped onesie with overalls and orange and white striped socks. His onesie has a little spider on the chest. We didn't take him out trick-or-treating but we did get about 30 kids at the house. I don't think Braeden liked the interruptions to his dinner and bath that the treaters provided!

Next year, we'll take him out around the neighborhood. Mat thinks Braeden should have been a jack-o-lantern this year since that's what he looks like when he smiles. His second upper tooth is starting to come in (making four total teeth). Such a cute smile!

Foiled Again

A couple of weeks ago Braeden figured out he could open drawers, use them to stand up, then pull their contents out and strew them across the floor. This is okay if you're standing right next to Braeden to catch him if he falls and if the drawer he's opened is the tupperware drawer. But it's less okay if you're in the bathroom and he's fallen forward shutting an open drawer on his fingers (true story).

So, Mat went to a variety of home improvement and baby stores to purchase child-safety locks. Thursday morning he stayed home from work and installed them on all of the drawers and cabinets in our kitchen and bathrooms.

When Braeden and I went into the kitchen last night to consider dinner, he crawled right over to his favorite new attraction--the tupperware drawer. He actually looked confused the first time he tried to pull it open, only to realize that it opened less than an inch before jerking to a stop. Undeterred, he pushed it closed and tried again, with the same disappointing result. He looked up at me and made a little noise of protest, then crawled, dejectedly, away to play with the cat.

Just one more rite of passage in our new baby-driven lives.

Va-cay!

Braeden got to dip his toes in the ocean on our vacation in Virginia Beach. The weather was beautiful and the ocean was still pretty warm, but it was windy. I don't think Braeden loved the ocean as much as his mom and dad, at least not this year. Next year he'll get to go in the water and will hopefully have a better time. Which is not to say that he didn't enjoy his vacation!!

The timeshare was right on the beach so we had great views out the wall of windows in the bedrooms. The boardwalk was three miles long giving us lots of room to test out his new umbrella stroller his grandparents brought for him. We bought him a blue VA Beach hat but Braeden wasn't so into that. He kept pulling it off and throwing it on the ground. We're going to keep trying though. His dad loves hats, and so does his P-Pa...genetics is too strong to resist!

We went to the aquarium on Monday and bought Braeden a green plastic cup with an orca on it--too cute. He's going to love banging it on the floor, high chair, table, his mommy's head, whatever he can reach. And one day he'll hopefully love to drink out of it too.

Braeden spent most of the trip with his fingers in his mouth...his front top two teeth are starting to poke through the gums. For some reason, there seems to be a direct correlation between teething and his maternal grandparents. If the pattern sticks, his next teeth won't come in until Christmas! :)

As much as we all loved the vacation, it was good to come home and get back into Braeden's everyday routine. However, when we left Friday there was just one case of the pox, chicken that is, at the day care. Now there are many cases! And two in the infant room...stay tuned!

Bottoms Up!

What a big boy drinking his bottle all by himself, with just a little help from that foot! Such a silly boy! We were in the car driving home from Virginia Beach when I took the picture. Love my camera phone!! More on the beach in the next post...

Clean Bill of Health

Tuesday morning Braeden went to the doctor for his nine-month appointment. No shots, but they did prick his finger to test his hemoglobin (normal, by the way). He got a clean bill of health, but the doctor said he needed a flu shot. So after work on Wednesday the three of us went back to the doctor's office. Everyone had a number (we were 39). They were on 15 when we walked in the door; we ended up waiting about an hour before they called our number. The shot was very quick and Braeden only cried for a couple of seconds. I snatched him up quickly after the shot and he quieted down. The nurse said he shouldn't have any side effects from this, and so far he's been just fine.

And now, for the important stuff...Braeden weighed in at 19 pounds 3 ounces and is just over 27 inches long. He remains in the 25th percentile for height and weight, but that doesn't bother us or the doctor. His next appointment will be January 11 which some will remember was my original due date.

This weekend we're going to Virginia Beach with G-Mama and P-Pa. We can't wait! And we hope it will be warm enough to at least dip Braeden's toes in the ocean!!

Stand up for G-mama & P-pa!

Okay Braeden, it's almost time to show us what you're really made of ... baby food puffs and homemade applesauce from Grandma Gendle and chopped up broccoli and standing up like a big boy and going for stroller rides on the boardwalk, etc. You know I tend to run on a bit. But we cannot wait to see all of you! xG-mama

Standing Tall

He's got it! Braeden can stand up on his own now. He'll use whatever is available to him to pull himself up. Saturday he used his laundry bin (which is really a tall rubbermaid garbage can with a dome lid) and the stupid thing toppled over. It didn't land on Braeden and he wasn't hurt, but he certainly was surprised! It was amazing to watch him figure it out. From a tentative motion with a lot of stops and starts to one seamless movement...he's a genius, for sure!

Tomorrow Braeden will be 9 months old. The new big thing in his life is that he's outgrown the infant car seat. Since he has to ride backwards until he's one year old, we bought a convertible car seat. (rear-facing now, forward-facing at a year) It's very plush! And it's not something you can take in and out of the car, so from now on, Braeden has to sit in restaurant high chairs, the top of the grocery cart, or be carried around. We think it's a milestone even if there's no place to record it in the baby book!

Saturday is for errands!

Here's Braeden in the grocery store in his favorite aisle. As you can see, we lead very exciting lives. Saturday we went to Home Depot, out to lunch, then to the grocery store. Braeden, like his mom, loves to run errands. And for that, we're truly grateful! Like at La Fiesta, this is Braeden's first time riding in the top section of the cart. He's in his floppy seat again which is supposed to protect him from touching any part of the germy cart, but as you can see, it didn't work as well on the Bi-Lo cart. As we were checking out, we noticed that Braeden was biting the thin metal bar you can see in the photo! Yuck!

Out to Lunch

Lunch at La Fiesta Saturday was our first time using the high chair at a restaurant. We put the floppy cover over the high chair and then sat him down and strapped him in. Braeden sat up like a champ! He spent the time at lunch banging on the table, chewing on his caterpillar toy, and eating puffs. And of course, within seconds of sitting in the high chair he'd dipped his hand in the cup of salsa! We very quickly wiped him off before he could stick those fingers in his mouth.

Then and Now

I thought it would be nice to post an early picture of Braeden. I think he's probably a month old here. It reminds me of how big he's gotten. Braeden is wearing a 0-3 month outfit. He used to drive me crazy by pulling his legs up into the body of his outfits with legs. That's one of the reasons he lived in those fleecy, zip-up bags until he was about 4 months old.

That was then and this is now...

Braeden must weigh 20 pounds now. Our next chance to weigh him is at his nine-month doctor's appointment on October 11. We'll get an official weight and length then. Braeden is back to hating diaper changes and getting dressed. This time around it's not that he hates being naked (seems to like it, actually); he just hates to be restrained. He is constantly in motion and wants to see and touch everything. Still loves Tilloo--crawls over top of him, pets him, shoves his tail or hair in his mouth--and the feeling is mutual. If Braeden is in his car seat on the floor, Tilloo will come over to sit with him. He rubs up against Braeden's feet which makes Braeden smile and then moves so that Braeden can pet him. They're very cute together!

Braeden crawls on P-pa's birthday

Congratulations to Braeden for perfecting his crawl just in time for P-pa's birthday yesterday! Both events were significant and P-pa loved knowing that Braeden crossed a milestone on his birthday! Keep up the forward progress!

The Boys Go for a Walk

Here's Braeden and his boys, Matthew (in the front seat) and Hudson (behind Braeden), going for a walk after lunch. (That's Audrey ducking down behind Matthew...she must be ashamed to be seen with those rowdy boys!) It's a beautiful day here, very sunny and about 85 degrees. There's not much to see since they're limited to the parking lot, but they like getting outside. I'm so glad to have a camera phone so I can capture moments like this one! :)

Braeden goes to college

Since it's labor day, the day care is closed. Braeden went to work with Mat...you can see for yourself how interesting his days are...

Just kidding! Braeden's just woken up from a nap, so this will be all for now. :)

On his own two feet

At day care on Friday, Braeden pulled himself up so that he was standing!! Almost immediately he fell backwards onto the carpet (thank goodness), but it still counts as a milestone. He didn't do it for us this weekend, but we don't really have much that he could use to pull up on. And maybe falling backwards was distressing enough to him that he wasn't interested in trying again so soon.

Otherwise we had a great weekend. Sunday was Braeden's eight-month birthday. While he didn't party hard, he did eat some more puffs, have a bath, and crawl/scoot from the living room by the TV through the kitchen and around the morning room. He's pretty fast and very determined. He's really interested in playing with the cat toys, so we'll have to pick those up soon. He's great on the vinyl flooring and the best thing about it--easy clean-up when he spits up.

Creams, Lotions, and Fat

Mat took Braeden to the doctor this morning to check out a rash on his back...which turned out to be a mild case of exzcema. She prescribed a mild sterroid cream to treat the flare-ups and suggested we start using lotion twice a day because she thought his skin seemed dry. Since I love moisturizers this won't be a hassle!

Since he was at the doctor's, they put him on the scale. He's gained half a pound since his weigh-in last week!! 18 pounds 2 ounces...the doctor was very pleased with his weight gain and his overall attitude--happy happy happy! She almost can't believe he's the same baby that struggled to gain weight when he was just a couple months old.

Sitting Pretty

Technically Braeden has been able to sit up since he was about 6 1/2 months. But we finally feel like he's doing it consistently and doing it well! In fact, he can now go from laying on his tummy to sitting upright all on his own. And if he has a toy (like the keys) to chew on, he's happy as a clam to sit there just like he is in the photo. He's still a little top-heavy and sometimes just tips over. Smiling the whole time. :)

The Big Weigh-in

We were curious, so this morning Mat took the little boy to the doctor's for a weigh-in.

17 pounds 10 ounces

At his last appointment on July 5, he weighed in at 15 pounds 13 ounces. In 6 weeks he's gained almost 2 pounds. You really notice the extra weight when you carry him around for a while. But at the same time he's more solid and controls his head and torso better which helps to make it easier to carry him for longer periods of time.

Closer and Closer

Braeden's been doing so well this week!! He did manage to make his mother sick...again...third time in three months! Aside from that, he's getting closer to crawling. He still gets up on his hands and knees, then moves his knees forward (sometimes one at a time, and sometimes in tandem). He hasn't figured out how to move his hands forward though. So he usually flops forward onto his belly making several inches of forward progress. Then repeats the same trick until he gets where he wanted to go. He's getting really, REALLY fast too!

Everything still goes directly into his mouth so it's crucial that we watch him very closely to avoid accidental ingestion of flip-flops, cat toys, phone antennas, and other thoroughly useful but Braeden-unfriendly items!

I promise to post a new picture soon too...it's been too long!

Today is Wednesday

Is this a crawling day? I was just reliving those little movie clips of Braeden "almost crawling" and wanted to wish him well on his adventures as a creepy crawler kid! Love from G-mama

Poor baby

Yesterday when we picked Braeden up from day care he had a temperature of 101.5; today his temp got as high as 102. And he's been cranky and fussy all day. If it's not better any better tomorrow he's going to have to go to the doctor. Think good thoughts for him!!

Braeden rocks!

I'm sorry it's been so long since Braeden posted anything new...it's not that he isn't learning new things or showing off new skills, it's more that his mother just hasn't had a chance to put them down in writing.

In addition to doing push-ups, Braeden has figured out how to put his knees down. So now he can get into position to crawl! All he does now, once he gets there, is rock back and forth. From what I've read, though, that's the first step...maybe he'll be crawling this month! He loves getting into that position and he definitely wants to move. He tries to get somewhere, but he usually just falls forward. And actually, he's pretty good at moving backwards! But he still scoots forward on his tummy or rolls over to get to a toy he wants.

I wish I could post video on the site, but it looks like that's not a possibility. Sorry!

Thanks for the mail

Thank you to Braeden for sending me that article about Krispy Kremes. I studied it and I think we are going to stay in as investors for a while longer -- that way when I come down to visit you, I can buy more donuts for us! xfrom P-pa

A pool day for sure

Good morning Little Braeden Boy and what a good pool day it will be! Tell your Dad to take you to the kiddie pool form some push-ups and then some swimming this afternoon! xG-mama

That blanket is very familiar!

For those of you who don't know or remember, that Raggedy Andy and Ann blanket that Braeden is doing his push-ups on was his mother's when she just a little baby -- a gift from Grandma Potter!

Braeden's new trick

He isn't the best at sitting up but he might be the only baby to do push-ups at almost seven months old! This is Braeden's new trick...he probably got up like this about 12 times Sunday while he was playing on the floor. He gets up in this position for about 5 seconds, then drops back to his tummy. After a few deep breaths he pushes himself back up again. He can't look around while he does it, but I hope he'll think to put his knees down next. And maybe that will lead to crawling!

We had dinner at our favorite mexican place tonight. Braeden wanted to eat too, so we gave him this knife to play with instead!

Serious Faces

I took this photo last night after Braeden's bath because I thought it was cute that father and son matched in green striped shirts (well, one shirt, one onesie anyway). And don't they look so serious?

Braeden's got a little cold so he's been coughing and sniffling yesterday and today. Most of the babies at day care are sick so we were expecting him to get it too. Hopefully he won't spread it to us, or at least that we won't get very sick this time around.

We tried putting Braeden in his new play pen this morning while we got ready for work but he just kept crying. He was too tired, so we put him in his car seat and he fell right asleep. Too cute! We'll try the play pen again tomorrow morning and hopefully he'll do better.

G-mama sees a toad for Braeden

We finally had a rain shower last evening and this morning I saw a lovely medium sized toad for Braeden in G-mama's rock garden! If only you were here!

A Happy Baby eats sweet potatoes

Tonight was the trial run of the Happy Baby Food Grinder. We microwaved a sweet potato then peeled it and put the chunks through the grinder. It worked like magic! In fact, it worked just like the playdoh spaghetti maker that both Mat and I remembered having as kids!!

To make it the right consistency, I mixed the potato with a little apple juice and a little water. Braeden loved it! It was a little thicker than out of the jar which made dinner time much neater!

We took pictures and I'll get them up as soon as I can. We also bought carrots and I'll get a butternut squash Friday when we go to the Bi-Lo. We also need an ice cube tray so that we can freeze cubes of happy baby food.

Happy Baby Food Grinder!

So, Braeden, how is that squash? G-mama has to know!! Better that knowing is seeing, so send us a photo too!

Yesterday's snail mail

Amongst the bills and junk mail, yesterday's mail included a very nice card/message from Candy and Bill with a picture of Braeden showing considerable interest in the musical frog, Baby Tad. I wish this were a digital image so I could post it for all to see. Braeden looks quite intrigued by Tad's various sight and sound antics. Come to think of it, so was I.

One of my favorite Braeden pictures

Although this picture of Braeden (and Mat) was taken on Father's day--a month and a half ago--it is still one of my favorites. If I remember correctly, Melissa told me both father and son had been hard at work most of the day. A well deserved rest ensued.

Sweet dreams Little Boy Braeden

It's getting to be nighttime at our house and we hope that you have a nice sleep tonight at your house! x G-mama and P-pa

I took this picture of Braeden from the front seat of Mat's car with my camera phone. Don't his feet look cute in those red striped socks?

Braeden's first post

Braeden has entered the world of blogging! Now we have a place to share everything that is Braeden with the people who love him, no matter where they may be.

So, to catch you up on what Braeden has been up to...He's got two teeth, the bottom front two teeth came in around the end of June. He's starting to sit up on his own using his hands to support himself. And for the most part he hates to be on his back. We put him to sleep on his back, but he rolls over almost immediately onto his stomach.

What's new in Braeden's world? He's discovered our cats...he loves them! When he catches a glimpse of one, he smiles and tracks it with his eyes. Tilloo, the stupid one, will lay down next to Braeden on the floor and gingerly put up with getting his hair and whiskers pulled. Braeden pets the cat (petting=swatting and hitting) and tries to stuff the cat's hair in his mouth. Hudson won't go near Braeden, which makes him the smarter cat.
