New Pics

Look at the tummy on that kid!

Here's Braeden sitting on his stool in the kitchen.

For Christmas I bought Braeden this laptop because he is fascinated with mine. He always wants to touch the buttons while I'm working, and since I worry he'll damage Elon's computer I bought him one of his very own. When I need to work and he wants to be with me, I tell him to get his computer. Then we can sit next to each other and work together.

Braeden and Natasha have decided that the best game to play outside is pulling weeds! There's a bunch of clover in Shaler's yard, so they found this big patch by the driveway and started pulling. Braeden followed Natasha's lead. If she yanked out some clover, so did he. When she shouted "pull it," so did Braeden. And when she yelled "I got it," Braeden did too.

It was really wonderful watching him play with another kid. Natasha is three-ish, so she's got a better vocabulary and speaks in fuller sentences than Braeden does. And he was very obviously copying the things she did. So adorable.

Look at that little half-smile on Braeden's face. He really REALLY loves his bike!

Riding Bikes

Here's a picture I took this afternoon of Braeden riding his bike with our neighbor Natasha. She's about a year older than B. Natasha peddles like a demon on her bike, but Braeden ignores the pedals and pushes himself around with his feet. He gets by pretty fast now that he's had some practice.

Now that the weather is getting nicer and nicer, riding his bike when we get home from work is standard practice for Braeden. Normally he and Mat hang out outside while I make dinner. But tonight, Mat "cooked" dinner while I hung out with B.

More about Dog

If you follow Braeden's blog, you know Dog is the build-a-bear dog Me-Ma and P-Pa gave Braeden for Christmas. He's very supportively dressed in a Giants fleece and is as soft as can be. Braeden loves Dog and has to sleep with him every night.

Before we put Braeden in the crib, Mat and I lie down on the floor with him (in the dark) and go through the list of people he loves. Sometimes we'll prompt him with a name or two, and sometimes he just starts listing everyone he knows...all the kids at day care, some of the caregivers, all of his family, and my friends (Emmy, Lisa, Kiki). He ALWAYS starts with Mommy which thrills me to no end, and he usually includes Christmas on the list. Then after he says Christmas, he says away and checks with me to be sure I agree that we put Christmas away. He's very earnest, and I find it so sweet.

Once we finish the list, we tell him it's time to get into bed. (Mat insists we call it bed not crib because beds are for big boys!) That's when Dog, Pig, and Elmo have to get into bed too. We get kisses and hugs, then put him down for the night. I always arrange the Elmo in the corner of the crib by his head and then put Dog and Pig along the side near his feet. I'm concerned (or obsessed, as Mat would say) with him not having stuffed animals too close to his face. As soon as we start to leave the room, Braeden moves Dog and Pig right up next to his face. Sometimes I'll go back over to him and move them back, but I know he just waits till I close the door to move them up again. I move them back down again when I check on him later, but when I go up in the morning, they're back by his face again.

The only other part of our nighttime ritual is that Braeden has to be the one to turn on his humidifier ('fier) and he gives Mat and I each a stuffed animal to hold while we're lying on the floor. Mat always gets Elmo (and complains bitterly about it), and Braeden decides which I'll get that night, Dog or Pig, and keeps the other for himself. And that's our nighttime ritual.

Very good news!

A very good friend of mine is pregnant! She had been trying for a while, and has just entered her second trimester. She's doing great, and I'm so happy for her and her husband! Congratulations Emily and Kenny!

She's blogging about her pregnancy, and she included Braeden's blog in her list of favorite sites. That was enough to shame me into updating Braeden's blog. I've added a bunch of posts since January 5, so make sure you scroll down to the beginning of January and read through all the posts. There's a lot of news and some great pics in there!

Every Friday the Tumblebus comes to the day care. A couple of the kids in Braeden's room got to do the Tumblebus each week, but when it was time each of the kids in his room thought they would get to go. So they would all put their coats on and start chanting Tumblebus over and over again. I'm sure it was tough on the teachers dealing with a lot of upset kids when they didn't get to go to the Tumblebus. But what really killed me was imaging how upset and disappointed Braeden must have been when he didn't get to go on the Tumblebus.

Sometimes Braeden would say Tumblebus, but we had no idea what that meant. One day we asked his teacher, and she explained the situation to us. They arranged for Braeden to do a trial run with Tumblebus. It isn't very expensive, so we decided if he liked it, we would sign him up.

He LOVED it! Last Friday he came home with a Tumblebus report card...Braeden began learning how to do a backward somersault and a cartwheel. He also started learning how to do push-ups and use the monkey bars. And they're working him towards doing a handstand; last week they taught him how to walk his feet up the wall.

So, each Friday you should picture Braeden on the Tumblebus.

Hide and Seek

Braeden has started doing the cutest thing! He hides in plain sight! He's convinced he's hiding, that we can't see him, but of course, we can.

He loves our kitchen stool; he stands on the stool and eats his snack and plays at the counter with his computer or his cars. But one day he climbed down from the stool and crawled underneath it. I think he was looking for an oyster cracker he dropped, but I pretended like I couldn't see him. And now he thinks he's invisible when he's under there.

So now Mat and I play "Where's Braeden?" whenever he crawls under the stool. It's so sweet. And so funny.

Trip to the Dentist

Mat and I took Braeden to the dentist this morning for his first appointment. Part of me wanted to laugh during the entire appointment. They took us right back to an exam room, and the tech asked Braeden if he wanted to get in the BIG chair. He took one look at it and freaked. If he could have, I'm certain he would have climbed right back inside me rather than touch the chair.

You have to try to picture the tiny exam room with the BIG chair, lots of dental equipment, very little room to stand, and three adults and a panicking toddler. It was TIGHT in there! I manage to get him in the chair by promising it sit in it with him. Braeden's starting to calm down, but then the tech reclined the chair. I'm laying down now, but Braeden is sitting straight up almost on my chest. He would not lay back, no matter how much I pleaded with him. After a few minutes the tech gave up and put the chair back up again.

She gave Braeden a little whale toothbrush, then got out the spinning brush she planned to use on his teeth. The tech was pretty good at this point, because she showed Braeden the spinning motion and let him touch it with his finger. He thought this was very funny, and I think it must have tickled his finger because he laughed. He even liked the fruity-flavored toothpaste. But when she came near his mouth, he was not opening up! After what felt like an hour, the tech was able to brush his two front teeth. But that was it! Braeden did, however, ask for and get toothpaste on his whale toothbrush about a dozen times. But did he use the whale to brush his teeth? Oh no, he just licked the toothpaste off the brush and asked for 'moe'.

The dentist came in, and he was able to look at Braeden's teeth quickly. He said everything looked good. Apparently lots of space between baby teeth is not something to be concerned with. Mat was convinced we should set aside savings now to cover Braeden's eventual orthodontics bill, but it sounds like we might dodge that bullet after all!

All in all, the trip wasn't too bad. We have our next appointment in September. On Me-Ma's birthday, no less!
